iOS 6… What you need to know

For those of us in South Africa, the WWDC took forever to arrive. Eventually the time came and we got to see exactly what Apple has in store for the new iOS, iOS6. Here are some of the features you can expect to see in the [South African Spring] launch of iOS6:

iOS Keynote Screnshot

iOS Maps
First up is the new Maps Software.

For iOS 6, Apple has moved away from using Google’s mapping service and began their own. True to Apple, the new Maps will be vector based images, which means map images will be highly detailed and allow you to zoom in without having the images distort of sorts. The new Maps with traffic and 3D flyover mode. Flyover mode will allow you to “see cities and landmarks from the air.” Another awesome feature in the new Maps will be turn-by-turn with spoken directions.

iOS Maps Features

Siri Updates
Siri has also been to school since her debut…

Siri will also be seeing some new updates in the form of a french maid outfit and amazing… eyes. No no, I make joke… That will be in the next iOS, iOS 7, maybe? hahaha… Okay back to the topic at hand…

Apple has been busy training this humble servant to such an extent, that Siri will be making her debut on the New iPad. You will also now be able to open Apps with Siri by using your voice, check sports scores, movie times and make restaurant reservations. Whether this will be available in South Africa, I’m not sure. I doubt it will be in the beginning, but once local places start to catch onto the trend I’m sure it will take off.

With iOS 6, Siri will also understand more languages and work in more countries too.

You will also be able to use Siri to update your Facebook and Twitter status’ and tweets too!

Apple have also been working with car manufacturers, by the likes of BMW, GM, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Chrysler and Honda, to get “Eyes Free” working. Eyes Free is a new Siri button for Siri in-car integration which will allow you to use Siri straight off of your car’s steering wheel, without so much as having to look at the iPhone.

Updates to Siri

iOS 6 Facebook Integration
Just like Twitter, now only with Facebook too…

With iOS 6, you will now never have to miss a friend’s birthday or event you have RSVP’d yes to, lose a contact number or email address or have contacts without caller ID images. Facebook will now sync calendar events, contact data and info straight to your iDevice, which will integrate with your Contacts and Calendar apps.

You will be able to share photos to Facebook from Photos app and Like Apps from the AppStore. With instant sharing to Facebook and Twitter, you will be able share info direct to Facebook and Twitter and better Notification Center integration will be present too.

For those who make use of Game Center, you will also be able to find all your Facebook friends with an iDevice and Game Center and get them to join you on games.

Facebook Integration

Shared Photo Streams
Shared Photo Streams…

With shared photo streams, you can now easily share photos with family and friends, even if they don’t have an Apple device! This will share selected photos with specifically chosen family and friends in real-time and even allow them to comment on the photos. Those you share to who are using iCloud on an iOS 6 device or a Mac get the photos delivered immediately in the Photos app or iPhoto. If you’re sharing with people who aren’t using an Apple device, they can view your photos on the web.

“Won’t this use up all your iCloud storage space?” you may ask… No, shared photo streams don’t count against your iCloud storage, and they work over both WiFi and cellular networks.

Shared Photo Streams Overview

Introducing Passbook
Introducing Passbook…

Introducing Passbook, a digital wallet for movie tickets, retail coupons, loyalty cards, boarding passes and more, all in one place. Passbook lets you scan a QR code displayed on your iPhone or iPod touch screen.

This I highly doubt will take off in South Africa too soon, but as mentioned above with the restaurant bookings etc with Siri, it should come with time…

Passbook OverviewFaceTime On the Go
FaceTime On the Go…

On the go? Sitting at waiting for time to pass and no WiFi connection? Or don’t have a WiFi modem at home? Now you can make FaceTime calls over 3G and 4G! This is a long-awaited feature, that will now be available in iOS 6. Now you never have to never miss another “wink, smile, air kiss, or eye roll.”

FaceTime Overview

Phone Updates
New Calling Features…

With iOS 6, new features to the way to receive and make calls will be available. First off are the new features when you reject a call. Like the camera icon on the lock screen, that you slide up to open the camera, you will now be able to slide to answer a call or slide up to reject the call and reply with a message or remind you to call back later.

Call Decline - RemindCall Decline - Reply

Another new feature is the “Do not Disturb” feature. This will still allow notifications, calls and messages to come through, without the screen lighting up or vibrating and waking you or disturbing you. You will also be able to set up “can’t-miss contacts” like your better half, boss or “BFF”. If someone tries to call you a few times over a set period, your iPhone will pick this up and allow the next call to come through and notify you, just in case of those emergency cases.

Do Not Disturb
Mail Updates
Mail Updates…

In iOS 6, you will now have a new “VIP” inbox for specifically set people’s emails to show up in. There will also be a “Flagged” mailbox for flagged emails and it will be easier to add photos and videos to email messages. To refresh your And to refresh your mailboxes, all you have to do is swipe down on the screen, like you do to refresh your Facebook or Twitter apps.

Another long-awaited addition will also be per account signatures. If you are someone who has multiple email accounts on your iDevice and your signature changes between them, like me you will be as excited about this addition as I am!

Mail Overview

Safari Updates
Safari, now even better..

Safari will be seeing some performance upgrades in the form of faster Safari JavaScript while browsing. You will also be able to view web pages in full-screen landscape orientation. This means you will be able to see more of the web while browsing in landscape on your iPhone or iPod Touch!

Safari will now also sync your browsing sessions, so that you could continue them on the iPad after starting on your computer or iPhone.

The reading list will no longer be just links to the pages, but the entire pages. This means you can view the pages in your reading list, even without any internet access!

You will also be able to see app store search results in the Safari search results and add photos from camera roll to sites directly from Safari, without leaving Safari.

Safari Updates

Accessibility Improvements
Accessibility Improvements…

iOS 6 will make it easier for people with vision, hearing, learning, and mobility disabilities to get the most out of their device and iOS. Over and above the VoiceOver updates(which is now integrated with Maps, AssistiveTouch, and Zoom), iOS 6 allows a parent, teacher, or administrator to limit an iOS device to one app by disabling the Home button, as well as restrict touch input on certain areas of the screen.

iPhone Hearing Aids will also become available, which will be Apple certified hearing aids that will work specifically with the iPhone and iPad.

Accessibility Overview

That’s not all…

Over and above these updates, iOS6 will see the following updates too…

Redesigned Stores
Better looking stores with Coverflow will be coming to iOS 6 too.

Stores Overview

Find My iPhone Improvements
Find my iPhone(Which should probably be called “Find my Apple”) will see the introduction of “Lost Mode”. This will allow you to send a phone number to your lost device for to whoever it to call. It will also update locations on a map to see where your device traveled while you had lost it.

Find My iPhone Improvements

Find My Friends
With “Find My Friends,” you will now be able to get location-based alerts, which is a great tool to see when your kids leave school or arrive home.

Will it work on my iDevice?…

iOS 6 will work on the following devices:

iOS 6 iPhone Compatibility

iPod Touch 4th Generation

And that’s a wrap…

These are some of the new features you can be sure to expect in iOS 6’s launch. The exact dates are not confirmed yet, but as advertised on the Apple website, iOS 6 will arrive in America’s “Fall”. So we can be sure to see this arrive in the next 3 or 4 months. Whether these are the only features, I doubt it. Once iOS 6 has been launched, we will be able to see first hand what features there are, what works and what doesn’t.

Till later…

Always remember, give a jackass an education and you’ll have a smartass!

Signing out.

  1. Awesome! Let’s hope SA can catch up to some of the technology that Apple owners experience overseas.

    • I can’t wait for iOS 6! Let’s hope as many of the features, if not all, are available in SA! 🙂

great! SA isn’t big on the iphone. especially to the youth market. the blackberry is favoured for the unlimited internet at a cost of R60 a month. However i wish to upgrade my blackberry to the iphone 4S but i am still a student and cost is certainly a factor so if im going to be paying that much more for an iphone I want all the features. i do not want to be dissapointed by the lack of features available in SA. I want to make full use of the phone.

    • Hi Deee,

Yeah SA is unfortunately always left with the scraps and to suffer on our own. I strongly believe that the new iOS will have all if not most of the functionality available. with the current iOS version, we have full functionality, besides local search with Siri, but then again Siri is still in beta.

I guess we will just have to wait and see what features we in SA have and don’t have when it releases in the next 2 or 3 months.

I just got my new iphone 4s yesterday and upgraded the software to ios5.1.1. its horrible! The sound on my phone suddenly goes off and non of the apps such as facebook and instagram work now, it wont even open. i cant even get the old ios back onto the phone. im really dissapointed. is there a way to fix this or how do i go about returning it?

      • Hi Dee,

My best suggestion would be to re-download the apps that are crashing. Delete them from your iPhone and then download them again from the app store. You could also try doing a “hard-reset” by holding in the “home” and “sleep/wake” buttons together until you see the Apple logo come up.
