How To Switch Between Apple ID’s

Up to now, you should have at least one Apple ID. Or, if you have a second one, thanks to the help of Creating a USA or UK iTunes Account, you may have more than one Apple iTunes Account. As I mentioned some of the benefits of having an account in the US or UK, there is a slight finicky thing about it. This is the AppStore itself on your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or iTunes can show that you have updates of apps, but wont show you which apps have updates available.

To be able to see this, you will have to log out of the one account and back into the respective Apple ID for the specific country to be able to update the apps. Maybe you aren’t concerned about that and just need some help on how to switch to your other Apple ID. Well, that’s what I intend on showing you how to do here.

To complete this guide you will need:

  • A laptop/desktop computer
  • Working & connected internet connection
  • Two or more Apple ID’s
  • iTunes installed on the computer
  • Internet connection(Wi-Fi or 3G/Edge) on your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch
*Please note that throughout the steps below, you can click on the image to enlarge the photo, if needed.

First I will be showing you how to switch between Apple ID’s on iTunes as this is the least intricate of the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

iTunes Steps

Step 1

You should have your iTunes open and the screen should look something like this:

iTunes on first open

iTunes on first open

If this is the screen you currently have in front of you, minus the music collection, then you’re halfway there. Next, look to the top left-hand side of the screen. There are the following options:

  • File
  • Edit
  • View
  • Controls
  • Store
  • Advanced
  • Help

It should look a little something like this:

iTunes Title Bar

iTunes Title Bar

Now , if you are currently already signed into an Apple ID, click on the Store, and look toward the bottom of the drop down menu and select “Sign Out.”

Sign Out of Current Apple ID

Sign Out of Current Apple ID

If you are not sure if you are signed into an Apple ID, don’t worry, you can check this by looking for the “Sign Out” option as shown above. If your drop down menu has the option to “Sign In,” well the you can skip to the next step 3 🙂

Step 2

After you have clicked on “Sign Out” you will notice the status bar saying “Accessing iTunes Store,” which will look something like this:

Status Bar While Signing Out

Once this process has been completed by iTunes, it will automatically open the iTunes Store page. At this stage, your screen should look something like:

iTunes Store Page After Sign Out

Step 3

Right, here there are 2 options to do the same thing. Considering option 1 is to the top right of your screen, this will probably be the quickest, but I will show you both.

Option 1

Click on “Sign In” on the top right of your page. The “Sign In” button looks like so:

Option 1 Sign In Button

Option 1 Sign In Button

Option 2

Option 2 is similar in it’s method to the signing out of the account. To do this, click on “Store” then “Sign In”:

Option 2 Sign In Button

Option 2 Sign In Button

Right, so once you have done either of the above options, you will see the login screen, like this:

Sign Into Account - Pre-Details

Sign Into Account - Pre-Details

Now fill in YOUR Apple ID details, as I have done below, and click in “Sign In”:

Sign Into Account - Completed Details

Sign Into Account - Completed Details

If you are switching between accounts that are for different geographic locations, like I am, you will see  the following notification, letting you know that the account you have signed into is for a different country.  In my case it’s telling me that the account is only valid for the USA. Just click “OK” :

Notification That iTunes Store Is In Another Country

CONGRATULATIONS! 🙂 You have successfully signed into your other iTunes Store account. Proof of this is to the right of the screen where the “Sign In” option was for Option 1, as I have circled below. Also you will notice the status bar showing that it is loading the iTunes Store as I have circled, toward the middle in the top of the picture below:

And that is that on How To Switch Between Apple ID’s on iTunes. To sign back into the other account, follow the process again from Step 1, but use the other Apple ID details.
